Sedation Dentistry
Many patients experience anxiety just at the thought of going to the dentist. At our family dentistry practice, we want to make sure that our patients feel no stress about their visit with us. We offer a relaxing, caring environment and will guide patients through each step of their procedure. However, some patients who experience higher levels of anxiety may need a little help to get through treatment at our Waynesboro office, serving patients throughout Harrisonburg, Charlottesville and other areas of Virginia. That is why we offer dental sedation with sleep dentist Alan Bream, DDS. Learn more about how sedation dentistry works.
Many patients avoid regular visits to the dentist because they experience extreme stress at the thought of undergoing an exam or receiving treatment. It is important for patients to know that advances in dentistry have come a long way. New tools provide more effective and less painful treatment. The latest technologies offer safer and longer lasting results. In addition, our practice’s approach to dentistry helps make our patients feel more comfortable during their appointment. However, we understand that for some patients, this is not enough to quell their fear of the dentist. Sleep dentistry with our sedation dentist allows patients to remain relatively unaware of the treatments performed on them during their appointment.

Our practice employs two different methods of dental sedation. Our sleep dentist will suggest either nitrous oxide or oral sedatives to assist you in feeling comfortable throughout your appointment.
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a colorless gas inhaled by patients to reduce any sensations of pain they may feel during treatment. Nitrous oxide allows patients to relax into a sedated state for a period that can last up to a few minutes. Depending on your level of anxiety and the type of treatment being performed, sleep dentist Alan Bream, DDS, may recommend nitrous oxide as the best solution to abate your dental fear.
Oral sedatives provide a longer lasting sedated state to patients who experience extreme dental stress and are undergoing a more involved procedure. If our sleep dentist recommends oral sedation to treat your anxiety, you will be given a pill to take about one hour before your scheduled appointment. You will need someone to drive you to and from treatment. By the time you come in for your appointment, you will be in a completely relaxed state and remain largely unaware of the treatments being performed.
